Ukrainian family denied entry at U.S.

Ukrainian family denied entry at U.S. border after fleeing war

A Ukrainian family seeking asylum from the war back home was turned away from the U.S. border in San Diego on Wednesday after attempting to reach family in California, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

A spokesperson from Customs and Border Protection told the Union-Tribune that the agency is "looking into the situation."

"I'm not asking for anything from the United States, just to be let in," the 34-old-mother, who requested she be identified as Sofiia, told the Union-Tribune. "All we need is to be safe. All we want is to keep our lives safe." She is accompanied by her three children ages 14, 12, and 6.

Though the U.S. has offered "temporary protected status" to Ukrainians already in the states when Russia's invasion first began, the coverage does not apply to subsequent arrivals.

That means "any Ukrainians who manage to flee to the U.S. border will have to navigate the same restrictions that have sent other asylum seekers back to Mexico," the Union-Tribune writes, "where thousands of asylum seekers have faced kidnappings, assaults and other violent attacks."

Sofiia said "it was my luck" that she left when she did. Her family still in Ukraine has told her they're running out of food, medicine, and gas.

The family was reportedly denied entry when a relative, a U.S. citizen, came to pick them up, and again when Sofiia tried to request asylum through the pedestrian lane at San Ysidro Port of Entry. Even when immigration lawyers who overheard the situation got involved, nothing changed.

"We left our lives, our jobs, our families and houses in Ukraine just to escape from this horrible war," she said. "All my friends and family are far, far away from me, and I don't know if they will be alive tomorrow. I just want to keep my kids' lives safe."

Weeding out bad cops?

 ‎Thursday, ‎March ‎10, ‎2022

Old Mans Room For All to know

White County sheriff to help weed out 'bad cops' after being added to governor's commission.

Weeding out “bad cops” will be part of White County Sheriff Phillip Miller’s role as a member of the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training.

Miller has been appointed to commission by Gov. Asa Hutchinson for a term that will expire Jan 14, 2028. In a March 1 letter to Miller, Hutchinson wrote “I appreciate your willingness to serve the public and I am counting on your wise counsel and advice as you accept this position of responsibility.”

Miller said the commission “sets the standard for all law enforcement in Arkansas as it relates to training, continuing education, minimum requirements for employment and all that sort of stuff.”

According to Miller, when Hutchinson formed his task force on law enforcement a couple of years ago, one of the things that came out of that was “they wanted to increase the commission meetings from four times a year to six times a year primarily for one purpose and that was to hear these decertifications and speed those up to where bad cops in Arkansas get a hearing – much like a jury trial, but in front of the commission – and this speeds those up to say, ‘Hey, we want to weed out the bad apples.’”

“We want to get rid of those folks, decertify those folks, who have no business being in law enforcement,” Miller said.

He said the commission is made up of nine commissioners and the only other sheriff who serves on the commission is Lafayette Woods Jr. from Jefferson County.

“This is a good thing for law enforcement in Arkansas,” Miller said of the commission. “The meetings will take place three times a year at the Arkansas State Police headquarters and three times a year at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy in Camden.

“It won’t draw me away from my job as White County sheriff a great deal. I can balance my commission responsibilities with my job as White County sheriff here. but I think as a commissioner it helps me to say, ‘I want to make sure my agency is the highest standard so that we are an example for other agencies around.’”

Miller said he applied for the position because the sheriff from Crawford County had retired and was rolling off the commission and he was approached by the Department of Public Safety secretary to see if he would be interested. He said he went through the application process a few months ago.

“Any time you apply for that, the state does a thorough vetting of it, so that took place in October and November of last year,” Miller said. “We just got to the point where the governor was provided all that information and made that appoint based off of recommendation and the background.”

Miller said his first meeting as a commission member will be Wednesday at state police headquarters in Little Rock.

Woman found in eptic tank

 ‎Wednesday, ‎March ‎9, ‎2022

Old Mans Room For All to know

Handyman accused of killing Florida woman, putting body in septic tank 'kept changing his story'

aw enforcement officials say a handyman accused of killing a Florida woman and putting her body inside a septic tank kept changing his story.

Detectives spent hours excavating the 57-year-old Cynthia Cole's Jensen Beach backyard Friday night into Saturday morning while investigating her disappearance.

They located a woman's body submerged in the contents of the home's septic tank about 4 feet underground.

Cole was reported missing on Wednesday. She was last seen at a community music and arts event known as the Jammin' Jensen in Jensen Beach on Feb. 24.

Officials located and arrested 34-year-old Keoki Hilo Demich, who was Cole's handyman, shortly after the discovery. He's been charged with second-degree murder.

Neighbor Len Goldfarb told WPBF he still can’t believe what happened.

"I think it's awful," Goldfarb said. "Just plain awful."

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said surveillance video showed Demich walking several times toward and away from the area where the victim's Jeep was found.

"From the very beginning we could not eliminate him, and the more we looked at him and the more evidence started to come out, the more it became obvious to us he was not telling the truth," Snyder said.

Snyder said Demich admitted he was at her house.

It's unclear how Cole died, but the sheriff said she had multiple points of trauma on her body.

Old Mans Room For All to know

Ukrainians Find That Relatives in Russia Don’t Believe It’s a War

Many Ukrainians are encountering a confounding and frustrating backlash from family members in Russia who have bought into the official Kremlin messaging.

LVIV, Ukraine — Four days after Russia began dropping artillery shells on Kyiv, Misha Katsurin, a Ukrainian restaurateur, was wondering why his father, a church custodian living in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, hadn’t called to check on him.

“There is a war, I’m his son, and he just doesn’t call,” Mr. Katsurin, who is 33, said in an interview. So, Mr. Katsurin picked up the phone and let his father know that Ukraine was under attack by Russia.

                                                   Father & Son

“I’m trying to evacuate my children and my wife — everything is extremely scary,” Mr. Katsurin told him.

He did not get the response he expected. His father, Andrei, didn’t believe him.

“No, no, no, no stop,” Mr. Katsurin said of his father’s initial response.

As Ukrainians deal with the devastation of the Russian attacks in their homeland, many are also encountering a confounding and almost surreal backlash from family members in Russia, who refuse to believe that Russian soldiers could bomb innocent people, or even that a war is taking place at all.

These relatives have essentially bought into the official Kremlin position: that President Vladimir V. Putin’s army is conducting a limited “special military operation” with the honorable mission of “de-Nazifying” Ukraine. Mr. Putin has referred to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, a native Russian speaker with a Jewish background, as a “drug-addled Nazi” in his attempts to justify the invasion.

Those narratives are emerging amid a wave of disinformation emanating from the Russian state as the Kremlin moves to clamp down on independent news reporting while shaping the messages most Russians are receiving.

Can We Empathize With Our Enemies? One Author Wants Us to Try.

‘Mockingbird’ Made Her a Child Star. Now She’s in the Broadway Tour.

Dreaming of Suitcases in Space

An estimated 11 million people in Russia have Ukrainian relatives. Many Ukrainian citizens are ethnic Russians, and those living in the southern and eastern parts of the country largely speak Russian as their native language.

Russian television channels do not show the bombardment of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, and its suburbs, or the devastating attacks on Kharkiv, Mariupol, Chernihiv and other Ukrainian cities. They also do not show the peaceful resistance evident in places like Kherson, a major city in the south that Russian troops captured several days ago, and certainly not the protests against the war that have cropped up across Russia.

Instead they focus on the Russian military’s successes, without discussing the casualties among Russian soldiers. Many state television correspondents are embedded in eastern Ukraine, and not in the cities being pummeled by missiles and mortars. Recent news reports made no mention of the 40-mile-long Russian convoy on a roadway north of Kyiv.

On Friday, Russia also banned Facebook and Twitter to try to stem uncontrolled information.

All this, Mr. Katsurin said, explains why his father told him: “There are Russian soldiers there helping people. They give them warm clothes and food.”

Mr. Katsurin is not alone in his frustration. When Valentyna V. Kremyr wrote to her brother and sister in Russia to tell them that her son had spent days in a bomb shelter in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha because of the intensive fighting there, she was also met with disbelief.

“They believe that everything is calm in Kyiv, that no one is shelling Kyiv,” Ms. Kremyr said in a phone interview. She said her siblings think the Russians are striking military infrastructure “with precision, and that’s it.”

She said her sister Lyubov, who lives in Perm, wished her a happy birthday on Feb. 25, the second day of the invasion. When Ms. Kremyr wrote back about the situation on the ground, her sister’s answer via direct message was simple: “No one is bombing Kyiv, and you should actually be afraid of the Nazis, whom your father fought against. Your children will be alive and healthy. We love the Ukrainian people, but you need to think hard about who you elected as president.”

Ms. Kremyr said she sent photos from trusted media sites of mangled tanks and a destroyed building in Bucha to her brother, in Krasnoyarsk, but was met with a jarring response. “He said that this site is fake news,” she said, and that essentially the Ukrainian Army was doing the damage being blamed on Russians.

“It is impossible to convince them of what they have done,” Ms. Kremyr said, referring to Russian forces.

Anastasia Belomytseva and her husband, Vladimir, have been encountering the same problem. They are residents of Kharkiv, in Ukraine’s north near the Russian border, which has been hit hard by Russian bombs. But they said in an interview that it was easier to explain the invasion to their 7-year-old daughter than to some of their relatives.

“They totally don’t understand what is happening here, they don’t understand that they just attacked us for no reason,” Ms. Belomytseva said. Her grandmother, and Mr. Belomytsev’s father, are in Russia.

Asked whether they believe that an attack is happening, Ms. Belomytseva responded “NO!”

Parts of Kharkiv have been reduced to rubble, and its city hall is a burnt-out shell. Ms. Belomytseva said she was sending videos of the bombings to her relatives on Instagram, but they just responded with the Kremlin’s oft-repeated claims that the invasion is just a “special military operation” and that no civilians would be targeted.

In reality, more than 350 civilians had died as of Saturday night, according to the United Nations. The real toll is probably much higher.

For Svetlana, a 60-year-old woman living in Cherkasy, the hardest thing to accept is the advice she has received from her sister, who lives in Belarus, and her cousins in Tomsk, Russia: that she and other Ukrainians should not concern themselves with what is going on.

Russia-Ukraine War: Key Things to Know

Card 1 of 3

Evacuation efforts under attack. As Russian forces continued shelling Ukraine, at least four people, including a mother and her two children, were killed outside Kyiv as they tried to get to safety. In the besieged port city of Mariupol, a planned evacuation was halted for a second consecutive day.

Protests in Russia. Amid antiwar rallies across Russia, the police said more than 3,000 people were arrested Sunday, the highest nationwide total in any single day of protest in recent memory. An activist group that tracks arrests reported detentions in 49 different Russian cities.

Military aid. The Biden administration is studying how to supply Russian-made Polish fighter jets to Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky repeated his calls for NATO to enforce a no-fly zone over his country, but U.S. lawmakers in both parties said they were largely opposed to that move.

“It’s not that they don’t believe it is happening, but they think that the high-level politicians should figure it out,” said Svetlana, who was uncomfortable providing her last name.

“I tell them that we are people too, and this has affected us,” she said. “I asked them not to hide their heads in the sand, I asked the mothers to think about not sending their sons to the army. The response was amazing to me. That is, that politicians are to blame for everything.”

She displayed a WhatsApp exchange with her cousin showing that her cousin had also been swayed by a narrative being pushed by Russian state TV: that the West fomented this war, was thrilled to see two “brotherly nations” fighting each other and was expecting to reap a significant profit from it.

Her cousin sent a string of messages asserting that Western defense companies were raising their profits, and that alternate sources of energy were being procured for the West.

It was not the response she had hoped for — no recognition of the gravity of the situation for Ukrainians or sympathy for the loss of human life.

“Every day I send them the necessary information, but the response is that ‘This is some kind of fake information, that this cannot be the case at all, that no one can or will shoot at civilians,’” she said.

Ms. Belomytseva, from Kharkiv, said that while her husband was still trying to communicate with his family in Russia, she had cut off most of her relatives there eight years ago, after the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of eastern Ukraine.

But Mr. Katsurin said he could not push his closest family members out of his life.

“They are our relatives, they’re the closest people we have, and this is not about them,” he said. “I am not angry at my father — I am angry at the Kremlin. I’m angry about the Russian propaganda. I’m not angry at these people. I understand that I cannot blame them in this situation.”

He said he thought about cutting his father off but decided that was the wrong response. “The easiest thing to do would be to say, ‘OK, now I don’t have a father,’” he said. “But I believe that I need to do this because it is my father.”

He said that if everyone worked to explain the truth to their families, the narrative could change. After a post on Instagram complaining about his father’s disbelief went viral, he launched a website, papapover.com, which means “Papa, believe,” with instructions for Ukrainians about how to speak to their family members about the war.

“There are 11 million Russians who have relatives in Ukraine,” he said. “With 11 million people, everything can happen — from revolution to at least some resistance.” (Not only in America, but every country of the 100's in our disinformation world. What do you believe?)

Stabbing Her More than 20 Times in 26-Minute Span:

 ‎Thursday, ‎March ‎3, ‎2022

Texas Man Caught on Video Murdering His Mother by Stabbing Her More than 20 Times in 26-Minute Span:

                                          I love you mom...

A Texas man was arrested this week for allegedly killing his 55-year-old mother by using a knife to stab the woman more than 20 times over the course of nearly a half an hour. Nathan Woodard was taken into custody Monday and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Teresa Dewitt-Pierce, jail records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

Authorities said the 26-year-old Woodard had been harassing his mother for weeks, culminating in Sunday’s fatal stabbing attack.

According to a press release from the Arlington Police Department, officers and emergency medical personnel at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27 responded to a 911 call about a possible stabbing at a home located in the 1900 block of Longmeadow Drive. Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found a 55-year-old woman who was unresponsive suffering what appeared to be multiple stab wounds. Medics attempted to perform life-saving procedures, but the victim succumbed to her injuries. Authorities at approximately 7:42 p.m. pronounced her dead on the scene.

Police also said it was the victim’s husband who returned home from the store and found his wife bleeding out on the front lawn of their home.

Police on Monday morning said investigators believed the attacker was the victim’s son, Nathan Woodard. He allegedly fled the scene after stabbing his mother and was believed to be armed and dangerous before officers took him into custody at approximately 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening.

According to an arrest warrant filed in Tarrant County and obtained by The Dallas Morning News, investigators obtained surveillance footage from the victim’s home that shows the entirety of the attack.

Dewitt-Pierce can reportedly be seen parking her car in the garage and walking towards her front door when a tall, thin man wearing a gray hooded jacket, dark pants, and gloves approaches her, the affidavit reportedly said. The man can reportedly be heard shouting “Mom” before hurling the victim to the ground at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Over the course of the next 26 minutes, the man can reportedly be seen “stabbing or cutting” the victim more than 20 times, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. After the attack, the assailant reportedly walked away from the victim as she lay dying.

The warrant reportedly alleged that Woodard has a serious drug problem which has caused him to be homeless for several weeks. During that time, he had reportedly engaged in a harassment campaign against his mother.

He allegedly slashed her car tires on Jan. 4. Police reportedly found him sleeping outside just up the block from his mother’s house immediately after she reported the tire slashing. He was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, per the Star-Telegram.

Dewitt-Pierce and her husband had reportedly called police several other times regarding their son’s harassing behavior in the weeks leading up to her death. Woodard had reportedly been issued a criminal trespass warning following one of the incidents.

Woodard was reportedly spotted at approximately 8:30 p.m. by an Arlington police officer. He was reportedly riding a bicycle on South Cooper Street and West Park Row Drive, less than four miles from his parents’ home. He was arrested at approximately 9:00 p.m. is currently being held at the Lon Evans Corrections Center. A judge set his bond at $200,000.

A GoFundMe account has been set up by Dewitt-Pierce’s family to help with the funeral costs.

Adoptive parents arrested in killing of 2 California boys

The adoptive parents of two small California boys who were reported missing in 2020 have been charged with killing the children, although their bodies have not been found

This photo provided by the Kern County District Attorney's Office from their Facebook page from a video news conference feed, shows photos displayed of Orrin West and Orson West prior to a news conference by Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimm

LOS ANGELES -- The adoptive parents of two small California boys who were reported missing in 2020 have been charged with killing the children, although their bodies have not been found, authorities said Wednesday.

Trezell West and Jacqueline West were arrested Tuesday night on murder and other charges in an indictment returned by a grand jury, Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer told a news conference in Bakersfield.

Orrin West, 4, and his brother Orson, 3, were reported missing from their family's backyard in the desert town of California City on Dec. 21, 2020. A huge search by law enforcement agencies and community members failed to find them.

“This morning, I'm saddened to announce that the investigation has revealed that Orrin and Orson West are deceased," Zimmer said. “The investigation has also revealed that they died three months before their adoptive parents reported them missing.”

The district attorney said she was not permitted to reveal any facts of the case until the trial.

The grand jury heard testimony from 50 witnesses over three months.

Zimmer said that a combination of direct and circumstantial evidence was presented, and the grand jury was convinced that the boys were dead.

“I would like to emphasize that the fact that law enforcement has not found their bodies does not preclude a murder prosecution,” Zimmer said. “As a matter of fact, there have been many, hundreds of what we call no-body homicides prosecuted across the United States successfully.”

Both parents were being held without bail on two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of willful cruelty to a child and a count of false report of an emergency.

Arraignment was scheduled for Thursday in Kern County Superior Court. Zimmer said it won't be known who the couple's attorneys will be until the court appearance.

The family has four other children, two of them also adopted, and all are in protective custody, Zimmer said.

Zimmer said that a week after the boys were reported missing “crucial information came to light” that brought in the involvement of police in Bakersfield, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of California City.

The district attorney did not reveal anything about that information. But it is known that the family lived in Bakersfield before moving to California City in September 2020.

Asked if Orrin and Orson had actually ever been in California City, Zimmer said “that's something we're going to answer during the trial.”

Police and FBI agents searched a field in Bakersfield in March 2021, but the results of that effort were not revealed.

“We now realize that the search for the boys began after the real tragedy had already occurred. ... This is not a resolution in this case and there will not be a resolution completely in this case until these boys are brought home,” Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Terry said.

Minnesota Mom Who Said She Cut Her 3-Month-Old Son ‘Across the Throat’ and Threw His Body in a Dumpster Isn’t Competent to Stand Trial: Judge

Aaron Keller - Yesterday 5:54 PM

Fardoussa Omar Abdillahi appears in a Stearns County, Minn. Sheriff’s Office booking photo.

A Minnesota mother who allegedly told the authorities she slit the throat of a three-month-old baby and threw his body into a dumpster after the infant’s father denied him has been ruled incompetent to stand trial by a district court judge. That’s according to court documents reviewed by Law&Crime.

According to a statement of probable cause obtained by Law&Crime, officers with the St. Cloud Police Department arrested Fardoussa Omar Abdillahi, 27, after a 911 caller tipped them off that the defendant’s baby was dead. The male caller said “a baby was missing” and that the baby’s mother had told him “she had thrown the baby in the dumpster,” according to the probable cause statement.

The caller learned of the situation because the “defendant had called her mother, who lives out of state, in the early morning hours of November 28th” and reported the same; the mother appears to have tipped off others who went to the defendant’s apartment to see what was wrong.

“Responding witnesses were acquainted with the defendant and were told that she claimed to have killed [the child] and put him in the dumpster behind the apartment,” the probable cause statement continues.

The man who called 911 “and other witnesses went to look for [the child] but could not locate him,” the document goes on. “Witnesses were unsure at the time if the defendant was being truthful and called the police when they could not find the baby.”

The witnesses “went to help and found the defendant crying and alone in her apartment,” the document continues. “The defendant repeatedly stated that she had killed her baby and thrown him away.”

The baby boy was a little less than four months old, the probable cause statement indicates. The “defendant lived alone” with the victim in an apartment, it also states.

Here’s how the police described their involvement; the authorities referred to the victim in police reports as “Child A”:

Officers arrived on scene and spoke to the defendant. Officers observed children’s furniture in the residence, but no child present. Officers asked the defendant where Child A was located. The defendant stated Child A was in the dumpster behind the building. As officers were searching the dumpster, the defendant stated that she stabbed Child A and put him in a black plastic garbage bag before putting him in the dumpster. At the same time, officers located the deceased body of Child A within the dumpster. The defendant was placed under arrest and the scene was preserved.

Later, the police read the defendant her Miranda rights; she agreed to talk. She told her interrogators that she started suffering from “headaches and feelings of worry and fear” after the birth of the baby. The infant’s father was also “denying” that the baby was his, she said, according to the probable cause statement.

Again, from the document:

The defendant stated she was looking at Child A wondering how she was going to get help. The defendant admitted she stabbed Child A with a knife from the kitchen. The defendant stated Child A was crying prior to her stabbing him. The defendant demonstrated that she cut Child A across the throat. The defendant stated she put Child A into a black bag with baby clothes and put the bag into a trash bin in her apartment. The defendant stated she brought the bag out to the dumpster about five minutes after she stabbed Child A. The defendant stated she called her mom about twenty minutes later and told her mom what she had done.

The defendant was booked on Nov. 28, 2021, at 8:20 a.m., according to records at the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office. Bail is listed in those records as having been set at $2 million.

An autopsy revealed that the baby suffered a “circumferential sharp force injur[y] to [the] neck,” the probable cause statement revealed. “The manner of death was ruled homicide.”

According to subsequent court records on file in Stearns County, Minn., Prosecutors secured an indictment against Abdillahi for first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree intentional murder (without premeditation). That indictment is dated Dec. 22, 2021. The penalty for premeditated murder is life in prison; the penalty for second-degree murder is up to 40 years in prison, the document indicates.

After a few months of legal wrangling and a mental health assessment, a judge ruled that Abdillahi is not competent to stand trial right now.

“The defense has notified the prosecutor of its intent to assert a mental illness or cognitive impairment defense,” one additional Dec. 14, 2022 court document indicates.

A subsequent Feb. 14, 2022 document indicates that the defendant has been “committed” by judicial order to an inpatient mental treatment facility.

Prosecutors countered with a Feb. 15, 2022 document which indicates an intent to pursue the matter if — and when — the defendant “regains competency.” That document is signed by Assistant Stearns County Attorney Chelsa L. Beaver.

Court records indicate that Abdillahi is currently listed as “committed” and “mentally ill.”

                                      Arkansas Corruptions

JACKSON COUNTY, Ark. (KAIT) - A teacher is facing sexual indecency charges after investigators say he had an “inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old student.”

Jackson County sheriff’s deputies arrested 35-year-old Christopher Bullington of Pocahontas on Thursday, Feb. 10, following a months-long investigation.

Captain Ricky Morales said Jackson County School District administrators contacted the sheriff’s office on Nov. 3 regarding allegations that Bullington was “having an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old student.”

During their extensive investigation, detectives uncovered several social media accounts and phone information. The information was then turned over to the Third Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, a judge issued a warrant for Bullington’s arrest.

He appeared Friday before District Judge Henry Boyce, who set his bond at $50,000 and ordered him to appear in circuit court on March 25.

According to online records from the sheriff’s office, Bullington is currently free on bond.

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Arkansas State Police are investigating a shooting that sent a Jonesboro police officer to the hospital and left another man dead.

Jayden J. Prunty, 22, of Jonesboro died at a local hospital Wednesday night following a shooting in the 200-block of Spruce Street.

According to ASP, an officer who was not identified, “encountered” Prunty around 10:30 p.m. near the Warren Street intersection.

“A struggle between the officer and Prunty occurred, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the two,” ASP said in a Thursday morning news release.

Both the officer and Prunty were taken to a local hospital. Prunty was later pronounced dead. ASP said the officer “sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.”

Later on Thursday, Jonesboro police released a redacted police report on the incident.

According to the incident report, Officer Corey Obregon called out that Prunty started fighting with him.

“While en route, approximately 10 seconds later, I heard Officer Obregon call out shots fired over the radio,” Officer Adam Charles Butler said in the report.

Obregon was shot in the right calf, while Prunty received a gunshot wound to the head, the report noted.

Obregon graduated from the police academy in Aug. 2019 and was the leader of his graduating class.

At the time, Obregon said he was looking forward to becoming a police officer and helping people.

”It’s a great relief but it’s not over yet. Like they said we have to continue our training and continue to learn and continue to get better and help make the community to get better,” Obregon said.

Prunty’s mother, Sherry, said Thursday evening that her heart was broken and that she “just lost her baby.”

She said her son lived in the area and was known to walk around. However, she said she did not know why he encountered police or why he fired a shot at the officer.

She also said Prunty had three brothers and described him as a “very intelligent young man.”

Special agents with ASP’s Criminal Investigation Division collected evidence from the scene and are continuing to investigate. Their investigation file will be turned over to the Craighead County prosecuting attorney who will determine if the officer’s use of deadly force was consistent with state law.

The Jonesboro Police Department said Friday the city attorney supported the department’s denial of a request by Region 8 News for body and dash camera video.

The Arkansas State Police is handling the investigation and a similar request to the office for body and dash camera video has been denied.

We have appealed both decisions based on previous Arkansas Court orders allowing for the release of daily operational information, even if it is used as part of an investigation.

Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver released a statement Thursday afternoon about the incident:

“As has been reported, an officer-involved shooting occurred last night in our city. A Jonesboro police officer was shot and injured but will recover. I thank God for the police force that protects our community, as well as the county deputies who were immediately on the scene. As a life was lost in the incident, my heart and prayers go out to the loved ones of all involved in last night’s events.”
