Is America a socialist or capitalist country?
Capitalism is a social system based on the recognition of individual rights, including property rights, in which all property is privately owned. The recognition of individual rights entails the banishment of physical force from human relationships: basically, rights can be violated only by means of force. In a capitalist society, no man or group may initiate the use of physical force against others. The only function of the government, in such a society, is the task of protecting man’s rights, i.e., the task of protecting him from physical force; the government acts as the agent of man’s right of self-defense, and may use force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use; thus the government is the means of placing the retaliatory use of force under objective control.
Socialism has been practiced as completely as possible many times in the 20th century: Soviet Russia, Communist China, Cambodia under Pol Pot, Ethiopia, Congo, North Korea, and, in its nationalist variant, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and Fascist Spain, among others.
Capitalism has never been fully practiced, but the United States in the late 19th century came closest to a capitalistic political system. Since the early 20th century, state control of property has steadily increased. The political/economic system in the United States today is not capitalism but a "mixed economy," with some elements of capitalism existing within a general structure of control and regulation by government. To the extent that a society is capitalistic, individuals (and voluntary associations of individuals such as corporations) are free to earn and invest capital by their own judgment without orders or permissions from a government.
We have a mixed economy:
Libraries are Socialist, bookstores are capitalist
Police vs. guard services
Water Department vs. electric company
Public school vs. private
Army or Blackwater
Public Works vs Contractors
It need not be one or the other.
The United States is a socialist capitalist libertarian Republican Democratic anarchic environmentalist populist traditionalist progressive country.
Capitalism: One group of people own what's called the means of production (factories, etc.). ... Socialism: Traditionally, this is the transitional stage between capitalism and communism. The state organizes the economy and society so that there are no more capitalists, and the workers run the place.
