If only you knew what you know today!
 1) although they say it, the world/people don't want to improve
2) bad people are often made bad by people they help
3) good people are just one day away from becoming monsters
I wish I'd known earlier that no matter what the situation is, no matter what the time is and no matter how bad/good things are, in the end it all has to come to an end. We all will die one day and we all will be left with nothing, all our possessions, our cherished memories, our regrets, everything will be gone with us. So its good to live life as if its the end of the world tomorrow. Its good to be carefree every once in a while.
*Don't care so much about what others think of you.
*Do what you want to do and what makes you happy.
*Feel the fear and do it anyway! Do not let fear stop you from being you. Don't be afraid of rejection.
* Don't take things so personally.
*Tell the people you love how you feel about them and how important they are to you.
*Be kind to everyone.
*Have fun in college but also take college seriously so when you graduate you really do have a foundation for your future.
* Meditate
* don't be so afraid to express yourself
* work through whatever difficult feelings you're having and don't try to wash them away with alcohol.
*This is the one life we have, so make it an amazing and beautiful one!
I would tell my younger self to stop living in fear and come out to everyone in my life. The choice was real simple. Come out of the closet and give yourself a shot at love and happiness, or stay closeted and wallow in the misery of loneliness that won't allow anyone to get close which leaves zero room for true friendship where you're willing to expose every vulnerability with someone because you trust them, and even less room for romantic companionship that could enrich every aspect of your life and transform it in ways that makes you want to be a better you to deserve the unconditional love you're getting in return. It shouldn't have taken a failed suicide attempt before I woke up and took responsibility for my life, my happiness, and my well-being. You're gay, so what, deal with it.
Well for a good man like me that really thought that i had met the right good woman to settle down with to have a family, she turned out to be a real low life loser since she Cheated on me which at the time i was a very good, loving, and caring husband which i was very Committed to her as well which it wasn't good enough for her.
Try foods from other cultures you might like it, find time to travel to other places even if you travel cheap, you will likely break up with your high school boy/girl friend and probably break up with your collage one as well. Take something in collage that is a profession for example engineering, nursing, plumbing, teacher, business instead of chemistry, comparative literature, etc. What would be fun? make a plan to do it, no plan, it likely won't happen i.e. I want to go white water rafting, I want to go to Austria to see castle. Participate in team or club of something you enjoy at least once a week. People who get married and have children are generally happier. Buy real estate as early as possible instead of renting. Getting divorced really really sucks make sure you marry the right person. Don't smoke or get fat you will regret it latter. Be happy, unhappy people general are too worried about comparing themselves to others with more. Try to live close to work commuting long times/distances greatly reduces your time to have fun. Sometimes change is a good thing, bad job find a better one too many times people accept bad situations because they are afraid of change.
Don't listen to people who don't care a candle about who you are and move on. Even though some people used to be your friend, they now don't care so y are you going around and begging for their attention? Look for someone else who can actually love you. You shouldn't have to be someone you aren't in order to gain attention.
Look for loopholes in all laws, but don't risk going to jail unless you need the black market for very good reasons.
Have morals, values and stand up for the right thing. Many won't agree or support you but at the end of the day you will have a clear conscious. A clear conscious will always bring you peace.Having morals, values,, and standing up for the right thing will keep you form getting into all sorts of unnecessary shit in life, and will most probably keep you out of prison.
To Pay attention to Details and symbols around You, You may Discover Things you Seen In Fictional Movies Are Boring compared To What's Actually Going On. Stranger Things are going on all around You.
Effort. Seriously. You may think you're fairly sharp, but that is absolutely nothing without pushing yourself, which is both doable and oh how rewarding. Basking in contentment over your relative level at high school while you're finishing a degree you don't care about and are completely mediocre in is deluding yourself and it wastes your time. Your time is precious. Others' time is precious too. Respect it.
You need to concentrate on better thinking, not be afraid of rejection and embarrassment. Rejection and embarrassment hurt far less when you know your actions are backed with solid reasons and therefore make sense. Also when you come across something you don't know or understand (a word, a concept, a theory...) you need to go look it up. I wish you'd found lesswrong back then, as it's a long way catching up now and a lot of time lost.
At some point you'll have gone about four years without sex. Then life's going to bring you back in touch with somebody you're thinking you could settle down and have babies with. So that you know: the thought that strikes you when you're on your way to meet up with him again is "I wish I'd explored all the fascinating sex stuff while I had the chance".
Oh, and when you live in China? Bite the bullet and learn the phrases that get you food straight away. You might still decide to live on coffee and cigarettes till 5pm for half a year, but at least you won't feel like such a tool forever after. I won't get into the mildly clusterfucky bits as those are nice learning experiences (do try to actually learn from them, will ya).
Last thing: five years is such a long time - you might barely recognise me or some of the things I do. Also, five years passes like a heartbeat.

Love it. They were both as bad as each other, you guys were all doomed either way. But I can laugh about it because I'm Australian, it'd be like Clive Palmer being our Prime Minister.

Hi Tim and readers. I think the illusion of democracy is coming to an end.
I am from Brazil, that is suffering too much about who will represent us. Rio de Janeiro had the nastiest and ugliest election for mayor in its recent history, and a preacher won a communist.
It had the highest count of blank and null votes ever (here to vote is mandatory), showing that people did not want any of them.
I mean, you vote for one of the candidates, but who chooses them?
We really need a new system to choose who will represent us. But the sad part is that they will not give up their privileges...

It's caused by the fundamental flaws of the current democracy system. Sadly, changing is hard and we have no idea if there's even a better system.

I just can't get over all the people who think Trump actually gives a rat's behind about middle-class workers, stagnant wages, or anything of the sort. The man sources raw materials from foreign countries, manufactures his clothing and other "signature" items in countries with low wages and lax environmental regulations, and has a long history of stiffing contractors and other American workers when the time comes to pay their invoices. He does not give a crap about the fact that middle-class Americans are struggling.

Hey Tim,
The fact that this turns up as the top result for the Presidential Debate makes me wonder whether you wrote this to attract traffic to the website. If these are the strategies being suggested by your digital marketing and content hires, Im worried.
The blog has a certain niche and a content style - please DON'T go mass and destroy the beauty you've built over the years. It'll be terrible to lose WBW to things that pander to the lowest common denominator.

First of all... if Hillary Clinton was using a server that was a personal/ private server, she has every Right to do with such a server, as she will!... IT WASN'T GOVERNMENT ISSUED, AND IT WASN'T "GOVERNMENT MANAGED"! The "MATTER"!... IS THE SECURITY OF THE INFORMATION COMMUNICATED ON SUCH COMMERCIAL SERVERS!
.
And frankly!... the FACT is!... if the "Commercial Server (and cellphone!)" that Hillary was using C-A-N-'-T B-E T-R-U-S-T-E-D T-O E-N-S-U-R-E S-E-C-U-R-E I-N-F-O-R-M-A-T-I-O-N C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-T-I-O-N-S... then!... W-H-A-T T-H-E H-*-L-L D-O-E-S T-H-I-S S-A-Y A-B-O-U-T T-H-E R-E-S-T O-F U-S? Why aren't our "Security Advisers" A-L-L O-V-E-R the inefficient and ineffective Commercial OEMs, re their inability to produce V-I-A-B-L-E C-O-M-M-U-N-I-C-A-T-I-O-N-S P-R-O-D-U-C-T-S?... A-N-D, F-O-R E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y? And!... W-H-Y T-H-E H-*-L-L I-S S-U-C-H C-O-M-M-E-R-C-I-A-L I-N-E-F-F-I-C-I-E-N-Y A-N-D I-N-E-F-F-E-C-T-I-V-E-N-E-S-S H-E-R P-R-O-B-L-E-M?
.
This is not about... HAS N-E-V-E-R BEEN ABOUT!... Hillary Clinton having gone "Rogue", and communicating "Federal secrets" to "foreign powers"!... e.g., to "S-P-E-C-T-R-E"! It's about her use of a personal/ private commercial server (and cellphone!)!... and her deletion of said "sensitive information" on her personal/ private commercial server, afterupon learning of expressed concerns by "security interests (namely, the FBI!)" of the "unsecured nature" of the communications, by way of the products she was using!
.
In other words!... if the Commerical Server she was using (and!... add in, her cellphone!) was to a REASONABLE STANDARD, then a directive to use government mandated and issued "SECURE TECHNOMAE" wouldn't have been an issue!... wouldn't have come up! And!... and as far as I'm concerned!... if U.S. government information was inadvertently leaked, or hacked!... and compromised the security of America!... I wouldn't be blaming her (going after her!) for such a hack, I-'-D B-E B-L-A-M-I-N-G (G-O-I-N-G A-F-T-E-R!) W-H-O-E-V-E-R A-L-L-O-W-E-D T-H-E S-A-L-E A-N-D D-I-S-T-R-I-B-U-T-I-O-N O-F S-U-C-H C-R-*-P T-E-C-H-N-O-M-A-E A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E I-N T-H-E U.S. O-F A! And!... if such cr*p is to be sold, it's to be sold with a M-A-N-D-A-T-E-D W-A-R-N-I-N-G, T-H-A-T T-H-E U-S-E O-F S-A-M-E C-A-N-'-T B-E T-R-U-S-T-E-D!
.
Again!... what does this V-I-R-T-U-A-L A-D-M-I-S-S-I-O-N by way of the FBI, say about O-U-R U-S-E of such "proprietary technoma"? If the FBI... AND, "S-A-V-V-Y POLITICAL PUNDITS AND VOTERS"!... don't think that such commercial internet servers (and cellphones!) are "s-e-r-v-i-n-g our interests", then should W-E be using such systems?
.
This is not an indictment of Hillary Clinton!... T-H-I-S I-S A-N I-N-D-I-C-T-M-E-N-T O-F T-H-E P-R-O-P-R-I-E-T-A-R-Y C-R-*-P (THE SAMSUNG DEBACLE, NOTWITHSTANDING!) GIVE US A BREAK FROM THIS R-H-E-T-O-R-I-C, A-N-D N-O-N-E-S-E-N-S-E!
.
Have a look at the Google result, titled, Volkswagen scandal Confirms the Dangers of Proprietary Code, by David Bollier, if one needs a "refresher" on the perils of commercial software! And then... check out the Purism Librem 15 PC!... and other such Free and Open Source Software based (FOSS based!) and Free and Open Source Hardware based (FOSH based!) ICT devices (including, FOSS and FOSH based servers!)!... and compare these just cited technomae to the said "SECURE SYSTEMS" being touted/ proffered by our "security infrastructure (and by the FBI!)" as the "SECURITY SOLUTION" for America's bureaucracies!
.
To conclude... as for the "gals" who showed up to this 2nd Presidential Debate with Trump in an attempt to "upstage" Hillary (and... indirectly!... Bill!)!... how seriously can we-- should we!-- receive the "discomfort" and "disdain" of an "offended delegation", who would (nevertheless!) not only appeal to Donald Trump re their displeasure, but who would also (by commission and/ or omission!... directly and/ or indirectly evidenced!) SUPPORT A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE THAT IS AS TAINTED BY THE SAME PERSONAL FLAWS, AS IS ALLEGED OF BILL CLINTON! I-T B-O-G-G-L-E-S T-H-E M-I-N-D!! And!... and regardless of the said flaws of Bill Clinton!... how does the BEHAVIORAL LACKS of both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, a reflection of some BEHAVIORAL and POLITICAL LACK in Hillary? Just because "the guys" have not been able to get their stuff together, doesn't mean that Hillary... and the future of America!... must-- in some abstruse and obtuse fashion!-- BE F-U-R-T-H-E-R V-I-C-T-I-M-I-Z-E-D!!

Robbing a bank is ok because I used my own privately owned gun to do it, and I can do anything I want with my property.
That's basically your argument for why its ok for Hillary to mishandle and leak hundreds of classified documents and thousands of sensitive ones, without going to prison like every other person who has ever done anything remotely similar.
Hilary is above the law.

"I can't even" has been my response to this presidential election for months now. I couldn't even read your whole post, I had to skim. Sadly, I'm not sure what lines were quotes and what were fiction. Post-election I heard a few clips direct from the candidates mouths (mostly Trump's, he's just so much more outrageous) and I couldn't believe them.
Hope trying to find the dark, dark humor made the debate tolerable for you. Me, I have never been more grateful for Netflix than during these debates. I may wrap myself up November 8 and binge on the silliest series I can find until Wednesday morning.

I hate that you guys think the future of the country is so funny that you will lie dramatically in ways that will make people make choices they would not have made if you told the truth.
This is the saddest thing I have read on this site yet, by far. Why the hell can you be so smart and informative when it's much ado about nothing, and when you are finally in a position to inform someone about a decision they can actually make you pull this con job.
Clinton: Trump says mean words.
Trump: I did say mean words, but I never acted on them. I'm sorry about the locker room talk. I think America's future has a bigger problem with people chopping off heads who want to chop off ours.
Clinton: See, he says mean words.
Trump; Really, I think we should discuss other issues. I've apologized to my family and the country, but locker room talk 11 years ago does not represent actions. Let's talk about the issues.
Clinton: See. He says bad things. Mean words makes him unfit.
Ttump: OK you want to go there. Yes I said bad words, but there were no bad actions. There are four women in this audience who you, Ms. Clinton terrorized. The first, Kathy Shelton, was just 12 years old when you lied and told the court that she had seduced her 40 year old rapist who put her in a coma and she's been living with this for over 30 years. The second, Paula Jones, was paid 850,000 dollars by your husband in a plea bargain for sexually assaulting her and you put a smear camp . . .
Cooper: We need to move to other questions, now Ms Clinton we have a Wikileaks tape showing you gave a speech with banks where you said, "A person needs to say one thing in her private donor meetings and another to the public."
Look, Wait... But Why. You need to not lie when we are talking about the presidency.
People should watch the actual debate. Lying about what happened when it affects decisions people will make that impact the nation, the most important decision most people will be able to make, this is unbelievably irresponsible.
Watch the debate. This vote is no joke. Stop pretending that you've watched CNN so you know what's going on. Actually get out of the bubble.
I can't believe Wait But Why will take us out of the bubble on Graham's number, something not one in a thousand people reading this will use, but perpetrate the bubble on how they should vote. If it's not worth 90 minutes of your time to find out what really happened, please, please please don't place your vote based on this mischaracterization.
Here's the actual debate:
This whole way you Tech people have of smugly belittling people without taking the time to see the actual footage is being played against you. You are about to make a huge mistake.

I agree that media bias sucks, but it really isn't Tim's responsibility to provide accurate, in-depth coverage of the debates. If that's what you need, I would suggest that you read another blog. Voters should conduct their own research about the election, preferably through websites with a primary focus on political occurrences. Tim provided funny commentary from a personal perspective. Nothing more, nothing less. Chill out, and take the article for what it is.

What matters most is recognizing the fact that we have two candidates for president, both with less than 50% approval, and we try to discover and fix the cause.
I suggest the system itself is the cause. The election/voting system. We need proportional representation in congress. And Ranked Choice Voting for single-winner races. First Past The Post is terrible for votes with more than two options. Even if you're just polling your friends on where to go for dinner, you should use Approval Voting rather than FPTP.

As someone who supports Hillary and has watched the full debate, reading this article there were more times when I felt like it was slanted against her. Mostly it was just by removing depth, but there are even things like representing 'Obamacare did some good things, but isn't working right now, so we need to fix it' as simply 'Obamacare is good.' that give a completely different meaning.
Based on your summary, it sounds like you think the exact same thing happened to Trump, so I'd assume that rather than being biased towards either candidate, it was simply slanted towards being overly simplistic and comical.. Which isn't surprising, given that it was written as a satire.
I'm really glad your point was 'You should watch the debate yourself' though. I must admit that when I saw you casting Trump in a positive light, I thought you would simply end with something along the lines of 'Obviously I'm right, the information is out there if you look for it, wake up'. So I apologize for initially thinking poorly of you for a position you held, and thank you for helping me see my own bias against Trump's supporters.

By far my point, to people like Wait But Why blogger, who are highly respected as knowledge bases, now is not the time, and this is not the case in which to be flippant. And to other readers it was definitely to watch the debate and don't take any information second hand. I don't care who is giving it to you, they are all putting their own bias by selectively showing what they want. Yes, I am a Trump Supporter but that's because he's right for me. Doesn't mean he's the right guy for everyone. I am totally happy with people who have looked at the evidence and decided he's not their guy and Hillary (or Jill or Gary or even Istvan) is. I just can't stand the fact that people are deciding based on biased information they are being given, and that people who normally will work to get things right and follow their sources to the 10th decimal place are taking this situation and saying, "look how glib and funny I can be." It drives me crazy. The majority of people have very little power and very little time with which to be fully informed. We happen to live in a country where these people's opinion is given full weight for this one decision. Please, please those of us in a position to do some research, send them to the most complete and reliable original sources.
These debates. The candidates speeches, their web sites. Those are actual sources.
Media people's claims of what they are saying, humorous or otherwise is such a disservice now. I was really expecting WbW to have a comprehensive and captivating info piece, giving the background to things like Allepo, the carried interest tax, the things that Hillary had done for children and other things that were brought up. That's his brand, obsessive detail and research. I was so looking forward to getting the stories behind the story from an un objective source.
I only went as far as the first Trump piece because that's as far as I got reading his, and reading his I got the impression he was saying Trump was condoning the behavior implied by the banter and going off on it. That was enough to get me to see he was making a mockery of an incredibly serious decision in front of us.
I'm on Quora and I see the same thing from Tech people all the time. It's driving me crazy that tech people, who can go into great detail on so many subjects, will just devolve into sound bites when faced with the only thing they could talk about that people can actually act on.
I don't see machinists saying, "Well Java coders suck. and PHP are jerks." If they don't know a subject they don't pretend to know it.
In 4 weeks people are going to decide to vote. There's a ton of priming going on right now. Breitbart is priming people to think Hillary sleeps 20 hours a day. CNN is priming people to think Trump putting concentration camps in the wall. It's just crazy that people who's value add is that they are supposed to have taken time to find and put forward the relevant decision making information are instead building facades designed to make it more confusing and not based on any reality.
We wouldn't mislead people who were buying a car or an insurance policy or vitamins or medicine. And we wouldn't be flippant about it. The ethics rule of thumb is, "If the person has a real decision, you don't mislead them."
So yeah, this thing bugs me a lot. And no, I'm not saying I'm right about Trump. I am for me. That I know because I looked really close and really long and really hard.
When an insurance agent is selling you a policy you expect him to be biased, but you expect your friends and information sources to give you the facts. I don't know when politics turned into rap battles, but I think it is the dumbest thing smart people do. Sorry to be on a soapbox here. I'm feeling civilization go down a hole that ends up with a nation being manipulated like puppets in bread and circuses and Animal Farm fashion.

Do you think Trump is right for most people? If not, do you think it's selfish to vote based on your own interests, rather than the interests of the nation, or even the world?

I think you should take your own advice and vote for Trump because Hillary Clinton will destroy the country.
