I suppose you are correct. I don't believe anyone should people names b/c we are all in this world to survive and sometimes we might just need one another one day providing our beliefs don't get in the way. I must have missed her comments b/c my computer froze on me and i had to restart it over and just said forget about it and went to bed. Forgive my misunderstanding. On a lighter note, I used to live near Quakertown, PA.

I have been employed at quest diagnostics for over 10 years. It is hard to show up to work anymore. The politics and red tape that most have spoke of are true.
Quest is fast to place blame. They always talk about six sigma i.e black belt, green belt. it is a bunch of crapola. Management always have meetings about doing work, but never do work! Tampa florida business unit recently has left N florida business unit, and now is being controled by Miami. If you are a brown nose type you can be inefficient and go far. Quest is more concerned about fake illusions rather than a smooth streamline operation. Vacation time is great. This is how they get their hooks in you. It was once a great place to work but now on Sunday night I get that sick feeling in my stomach. there is a bunch of job justification going on. [it's not broke, but let's break it and fix it] lets have another stupid system with a acronym.... c.r.a.p. c.ompany R.evokes a.ll p.ersonal. If you truly want to see a view of what it's like. Yes, understand fully as never felt that way until I moved to my new job site here in Arkansas. Went from Smithkline to Quest Diagnostics and felt sick when I knew I had to go to work. Supers are so stupid as there always pushing more and more on to people an they don't assist or help in any way. They love to write up people for nothing. After twenty years and terminated for being honest and above board. Never fired in my life. But, was asked in advance if it would harm my family. In which I replied nothing this low life company could harm my family. No, never filed for unemployment nor even fought for my job back either. Attorney fee's just not worth it. But, I let others know how Quest Diagnostics is and hopefully they won't waste there life as many of us have.

i just wanna say that quest diagnostics in syosset NY is a wonderful place to become mentally frustrated . You can find all kind of things like cronism, collusion, and connivance. This is the place you should recommend to your enemy indirectly in order to get revenge.

Hey, I know the feeling. I was NOT a yes man and would fight for my employees if I felt the need to do so. (Not all management was incompetent. My employees, phlebs and couriers loved that I would pitch in whenever.) 5 days short of my 25 anniversary, I was fired for something that occurred 18 months prior and was never brought up to me in those 18 months prior to being fired. And the sad part is everyone my my manager to HR knew what was going on and they did not care......

"Quest pays better then McDonalds! But that̢۪s about it"

Tony, you made excellent and accurate statement.
I worked at quest for 10 and half years, and at the end of my employment
I was barley managing to pay my bills. All the effort and money I spent to go to college and get a Degree made no difference. Suddenly I woke up and look for a job around the area, thank god, I found a job that pays better.

Quest took my young energy and exploited me thinking that there is a future in the company for growth. The truth is, there is none!

All the vision statement and "commitment to our employees" a sales pitch!
I have no regret working for quest, it made me a better person, I don't take crap from co-workers, supervisors or directors, they are confused and don't know where to fit in.

Now! for people who want to work for quest, my advice is, go join the company but don't expect to live a comfortable life or be proud who you work for, the myth is busted, quest's staffing strategy is a scam, working for quest doesn't give you any intrinsic satisfaction. It is the worst paying company in America at all levels. My former boss just celebrated her 30yrs. at quest, but by moving out of quest, I make more than her as a Med-tech with just 12yrs of experience. To bad she can̢۪t go out hunt for a job like me because she stuck around a little too late and she is not as marketable as I am.

Lab Supervisor Bob in Portland, Oregon

I work for a forensic laboratory in law enforcement, and had a current Quest employee interview for a position today. I was not on the interview team, but I gave them a tour of our facility. I was fascinated by the workload that this employee says they could handle. They are in the clinical side, and among 4 employees, she said they process 120 samples a day. I wish I had more time to ask what the numbers were for the various tests. Two things come to mind....
1) We can learn some things to be more efficient, but 2) I suspect that the current workload induces burnout. I need to compare apples to apples though. Anyone who is familiar with the clinical or the forensics side, I'm curious about the methods used, and the workload for a small lab analyst group of 4 to 5 scientists/techs doing analysis to screen and confirm drugs of abuse in urine and blood. I think we could learn a lot from their operations, both the good and the bad.

The "happy" person above is obviously not a cytotechnologist at Quest. I've never seen/WITNESSED anything more unethical than the CPAP policy that Quest uses to force cytotechs to screen faster and then punish them for making mistakes....ANY mistake. How would you like your pap smear to be read by a stressed-out over-worked cytotech? The benefits don't matter in the long run when your health has taken an irreversible dive and you're having panic attacks every day from the stress. And I know all about the Atlanta business unit. The "big wigs" there are cold and ruthless. What comes around goes around! The Atlanta BU is going to eventually implode, that I'm sure of. And if the other Quest BU's are operating in the same manner, the same will happen to them. Quest won't be looking at my pap smear, and I warn every person I meet in my life to make sure they insist that their OBGYN send their pap to a small local lab.

That's a great idea Tony! I post my negative comments on this forum because I want others to know what's going on with Quest Atlanta BU before they decide to work there and also I hope that something can be done about their unethical practices by putting the word out. Plus I'm still disgusted with what they did to us in Memphis of course. Your idea would be a positive way to use this forum. Wishing you the best....

You're exactly right. And if people only knew what goes on. How your blood might not even be spun down until hours later when there are one or two people working in a psc, trying to keep their wait time under 20 minutes. How urine samples that should be transferred in under an hour might sit there for 3 hours, and yea, maybe it now looks like you have a uti when its all just really stressed out overworked employees not having the time to get to it in time. Quest is becoming one of those companies with a bad reputation. And I agree with looking at the front line. Quest is definitely going to suffer for impossible policies it is imposing upon its employees.

You are 100% correct. Six Sigma, my butt. The expectations that are required of us on the job are unrealistic. 20 minute or under wait times and do this with 2 to 3 employees with a patient load of over 100 per day? You CANNOT carry out a work load such as they expect of you. The managers are completely out of touch when it comes to realizing the issues at the PSC level. Teterborough is clueless. And like you, a mere 7 years ago I used to enjoy my job. It was THE place to work. Something happened and now it has been compromised greatly. Patient care is now suffering..

I too have had a very rough time with this company. After 9 years and countless nights of lost sleep trying to comply with the continuing demands of this job, I put in my resignation in order to move to a different locale and away from certain managerial persons. From that date on, I was torn to shreds by supervisory individuals who had less credintials than I do...... (Go figure) I was actually told that if the PSC that I wanted to transfer to called for a referrence, that my current months errors would be addressed. This is after 9 years of "meets or exceeds expectations" on my annual reviews. Major threat there.... I'm trying to excape a badly run business unit and I'm being threatened with a blemished referrence because I've put in for change? How typical of Quest Diagnostics....... As long as you beat your head against the wall for them and put family and health at the end of your spectrum of life, you're in the graces of their "Gods".

*I have witnessed gender bias= We had a male coworker who couldn't have been on time if he had slept in the lobby. I was told that he was a "single father, afterall." (Single women are on time every day, yet a male has schedule flexibilities?) Racial bias is also an issue. I won't mention a skin color because that isn't my concern. I have friends of many races. The acts of Quest Diagnostics themselves speak volumes.

*I witnessed a supervisor processing specimens without PPE. I was written up for not having my lab coat buttoned all the way to my neck, yet this person had NO lab coat on, was handling tubes with NO gloves and actually dug a tube out of the sharps container with hemostats. The offices extension phone was even in the processing area, mouth piece down, on the contaminated countertop as they were "helping" by processing specimens....
*I have assisted patients with billing issues that were very unsettling. Double billing, error billing, bills that they did not have due, etc.

*Medicare and Medicaid billing is also an issue..... I won't even go there for fear of reprisal...
*I've witnessed temporary employees come into the site with no previous experience, nor the required months of on the job training or "stick" requirements.
*I have seen mistakes swept under the rug and pawned off on someone else. Testing mistakes blamed on phlebotomist error when they were NOT.
*I had a MAJOR compliance issue that I tried to address. An impaired co-worker on more than one occasion. (Yes, use your imagination here.) I was told that it was MY responsibility to handle the situation....... (For the record, I am not in a supervisory postion.)
*I have been held back for promotions due to the fact that no one else wanted to fill my position should I be promoted. I essentially performed my duties too well and they didn't see fit to let me grow within the corporation. The position that I was told I'd hear a decision on by the next day took them a solid week to find someone else to take.......... It took me four weeks to even be informed that the position was available, and then I was denied. "Grape vine" informants let me know how I was shafted....

This company is corrupt from within when it comes to employee concerns. If you are thinking about hiring on........ BEWARE. It all seems alluring from the outside looking in. Once you are in neck deep, you're screwed. The benefits are good, the stock options are good, the earned time off is attractive, but this company will suck you dry. The work load is critical, they won't staff adequately so that supervisors can "meet goal." You don't have much say so in when you can take your earned time off. It depends on what's convenient for Quest.. The area and site supervisors have no idea how to relate to people nor do they have the aquired experience to do their jobs correctly. It's favoritism to the max. Believe me, you'll be in their good graces for a year or so, then it's to hell with you.

I wish I'd never been sucked in. The pay isn't up to par either. After all those years and all those great annual reviews, I still didn't make median wage for my job capabilities. Think long and hard before you accept employment from them. Take it from someone who's seen it all and tried to forget most of it...........

Current Employee said: No, I am not a supervisor or any part of "management". I may sound like I need to lighten up to you, but why do people that complain stay at Quest year after year after year. The complainers are the ones that need to lighten up in my opinion and realize how many people are lined up around the block to have their jobs. I feel very lucky to work for Quest Diagnostics.
I agree with you....i'm one of those people who would like to have a job @ Quest.....I have a question?....after doing the Virtual Job Tryout on line....what are the kind of questions they ask on the interview?....I am fresh out of school...however I have 300+ draws .... I started school in Sep '07 and got my license in May '08..... I haven't work in 13 years..... so i'm just wondering what kind of questions they ask now a day....i don't know too much about the field either just the basic knowledge that you learn @ school...Any pointers would be greatly appreciate it....by the way what tube is use to draw CMT?.....the computer asked me that...and i didn't know that one....i can't even find it on my text book...

thank you

Some of the problems at Quest, certainly not all of them, are related to Med Techs thinking they are professionals. In your training you are taught that you are this highly qualified, well trained, put on a pedestal professional. The truth is you're an assembly line worker. In a hospital you are a public servant and in private business you're a working resource. In the old days there was technique that took years to master. Now you put a sample in a box and hit the run button. In the near future high school students will be taking our jobs. They are much more versed in computers and don't have the MT attitude. In most places where you were exempt and didn't have to clock in. You are now now non-exempt and hourly. This is the first step in taking away your professional status. Doctors and nurses think you're just lab boys and lab girls. You can put all kinds of degree and license limits on the jobs but you might be fighting a losing battle.

Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers?

What is a typical day in the life of an employee at Quest Diagnostics?

I have just come from a Quest Diagnostics office (Lemon St. in Rancho Cucamonga California). It was a horrible experience. The staff was rude and uncaring. The patients, many of them coughing and sneezing, were herded into a reception area like cattle. I waited more than an hour before the receptionist would speak with me and take my referral paperwork. The receptionist, Melissa, was completely unconcerned and I could tell that she had no interest in helping me. You may wonder why I am posting this on a jobs forum. I want to warn you, YOU DO NOT WANT TO WORK FOR A COMPANY LIKE THIS. The simple fact of the matter is I plan on sharing this experience with as many people and organizations as I can. This is truly the only recourse we consumers have when our insurance companies utilize a single source for this type of service.

I do hope you call not the local PSC but the corporate office to complain. I worked there for 25 years and it was on the decline back in 2005. Now what I hear is amazing and would not had been tolerated back then.

Understaffed PSC's, employees no longer trained on AECR (Achieving Excellent Customer Relations) We used to train for a week new employees on the TORO system (now Care360)now it is like a day.

Sad, very sad. Now the new excitement? Quest has opened a reference and esoteric lab in India. I am sure Surya has the friends and Family Plan there.

Hi, I applied for the CSR position in Atlanta and I'm not sure if the prior comment relate to that position also. I'm big on customer service and I don't want to represent a company with my professionalism and be still considered rude because of others. Do you know the hiring process with this company? Thanks! What does it mean when the profile say "Under Consideration"

Just for the record. I have to comment and say, depending on the state. Indeed, there is an injustice in the work environment, this is due to the supervisor and his/her intentions. The state of Illinois is an employment at will state. In other words, an employer may fire an employee for any reason or no reason at all. That does not mean that an employee does not have any rights. But, nonetheless, an employee in Illinois does not have the right to their employment. As I say this, the supervisor in question may of course have ulterior motives to fire the employee. I did something that was the rightful thing to do and my supervisor clearly had it out for me. After over 10 years of working at the Wood Dale Business Unit, and this person was a temp, kissed a lot of executive cheeks and made way to supervisor. Needless to say, I didn't do that, and it led me out the door. In Quest at Wood Dale Illinois, beware who you befriend before you get the job.

Yes, the hiring supervisor or manager will be interviewing the candidate, with or without an HR representative. This will be depending on the hiring department. Then, depending on the department, a 2nd interview will be required. This process might take weeks until the first interview will be started. At least the outside candidates will wait a while. The internal candidates go 1st. Same with the 2nd interview.

When I worked for Quest prior to their taking over LabOne..it was a great place to work. This ended in 2005 when we had a "town hall" meeting and were told about LabOne. Our lab was closed in Lexington, KY except for courier and phlebotomists. We were given the choice of relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio or severance. I was one of the brave souls that relocated to Cincinnati. Quest as gotten too much corporate greed now. There's no compassion for their clients and especially none for their employees. You are just a tool for them to gain more and more. My advice is to seek employment elsewhere. If you already work there...get out before they put you out.

Yes, I agree. I was working for Quest for 18 years. Originally it was originally like an oversized "mom & pop" shop, this is when it was Met Path, then it merged with Corning Clinical Laboratories. It wasn't too bad. Then we were Quest when we spun off of Corning, it was getting a little uncomfortable. We were starting to obtain all these other laboratories. The growth was getting tremendous. Then when we acquired Smith Kline Beecham Laboratories, we had to prove to the government that we're weren't a monopoly. We started to compete against ourselves. We were overwhelming for our britches. The Wood Dale Business Unit was competing against our Dallas Business Unit. The patient technically isn't #1, it's "how do we stomp the competition?" Growth was the main prerogative, whether it was to procure LabOne & lay off employees to dissolve any duplicate positions which, as you said Janie in Kentucky, either relocate them or severance the employees. Then there was the loss of our United Health Care Insurance contract. We never renewed it, this made it now a situation for the clients, or our physicians to make a choice wether the were going to be threatened to be "fined" by United Health Care Insurance cause they were contracted with them, or send them to our competitor Lab Corp who was contracted with them. Clients didn't want to deal with that so they went to Lab Corp. It's not about the quality of work, it's about how high they can price out their tests to "grow", or how much can they grow in terms of clients. The employees won't come first at all, as Anonymous at Quest said "The state of Illinois is an employment at will state." People are expendable. It's too bad that some of Quest's people in management feel they are untouchable, they too have negative attitudes towards estranged individual and/or have such ill will towards people & harbor vindictive feelings. They will "find" ways of leading you out the door. HR will a be on management's side. Never trust them.

Remember back in Ken Freeman days, he would say,

"Satisfied Employees, make satisfied Customers, who make satisfied Shareholders".

Now it is satisfy the shareholder at all cost.

The MI BU I feel is the worst out there for deceit. Much like the Lexington debacle, (How Louisville, Lexington and Nashville ended up with AUB as their main lab still amazes me)AUB actually had me work at all three sites.

When I worked there when it came time for annual reviews we would receive a grid showing what the employee is to receive based on their performance. Yet they always forgot as I managed employees for both AUB and WoodDale I would receive the TRUE Midwest BU grid which would show higher percentages in payouts.

I know me being a thorn in their side is why I am no longer there, however I would never let my employees be screwed by AUB. I still believe with the new LabOne lab in Cinci, I think AUB will be absorbed very soon into there.

I work for the lab in Cincinnat and right now the company's goal is the by the elite lab our area. We just lost a huge client and have almost completely lost another large client. The biggest problem in our processing area is the lack of discretion taking with hiring people. It is horrible, we go through temps like a roll of toilet paper. The training is better than it used to be, but we only have 1 trainer and how is supposed to properly train 6 people that all start at once? In the past week there were 3 different specimens lost in the lab. One was for a very small child which was more than likely ended up in the trash because it was a problem specimen and the person who was doing the problems had so many things on their desk that it got knocked into the trashcan. The other 2 specimens were found in our technical area. Apparently the tubes were dropped and rolled under the instrument and no one bothered to check in these areas or even notices that they had dropped the specimens. I have worked in this BU almost from the beginning of the Quest takeover and have worked with all kinds of people, and unfortunately, we do lose good people because they get tired of seeing how things are managed on a day to day basis. It really breaks my heart to see how uncaring people are about handling specimens correctly. Specimens are thrown so hard on our conveyor belt that they break, people mix up patient samples or do not realize that the patient service center but the incorrect patient in the bag because they do not pay attention to their work. That reminds me this past week, a PSC did a 4 way name mismatch. They had put 4 incorrect specimens into 4 different patient reqs. How on earth is this possible? Are this people even awake when they are working? I do enjoy the type a work I do, but I there are so many times when I can stand the atmosphere at Quest. I don't feel that I necessary get treated unfairly, but I do feel that I go the extra mile for no reason.

Whoever you are Cincy78, I worked with you. I thought I was the only one going that extra mile. So glad to hear I was not alone!
So sad to hear that things have not changed in Cincinnati. I admit that I miss my job at "Quest"...that's the Quest Diagnostics I worked for in Lexington, KY. I do not miss my job at "LabOne".
You still have LabOne people in control, therefore you will NEVER be Quest...at least not the Quest that I knew. You can't close your eyes to what you see going on around you AND you can't get anyone to do anything about it nor can you fix it alone. Quest used to be respected, but now I never hear a good comment about them anymore. Best of luck to you Cincy78.

just don't do it. Or just be prepared to keep your zune or ipod stuck in your ear and keep your head down. Otherwise you will be dragged into bosses social climbing.

"Quest has a new policy, that is to hire entry level low paying jobs and have people trained to run machines and become med-techs."

That's right, they do in fact do this. What they don't tell people is that they
are not 'really' med-techs. To become a med tech is to go get a specialized bachelors degree, train for a year in every department in a hospital lab on both practice and theory and then sit for a board certification exam--the ascp.
No one who is trained on any instrument is a Med Tech and cannot legally be hired to work in a hospital or other setting. They can only be owned by quest for the rest of their lives.

Current employee in Teterboro, NJ in Teterboro, New Jersey said: I can't believe some of the comments on this board! I have worked for Quest Diagnostics for 6 years and my sibling has been here 10 years and we LOVE this company! They are more than fair with all of their employees and you can't beat the pay and benefits. 401K matched 6%, tuition reimbursement, medical, dental, PET insurance, life insurance, employee stock purchase at discounted rate and the list goes ON AND ON! As far as overtime, it's offered but NOT MANDATORY! Employees are usually talking about how they appreciate the availability of overtime when they need extra money (Xmas, new house, new baby, etc.). Quest Diagnostics provides a "CHEQLINE" where they provide a toll free number where employees can call to report any potential violations or any concerns anonymously. They have a survey for employee feedback AT LEAST once a year because they are extremely interested in becoming one of America's Top Places to Work. The people that have commented negatively here are the ones that don't have anything to say when it's time to bring up issues here in the workplace. There is ALWAYS a listening ear here at Quest and I would not rather be working anyplace else. I ENJOY WORKING AND AM PROUD TO WORK FOR QUEST DIAGNOSTICS.
OMG, you could not be more wrong!!! I had a suupervisor call me at my private home and yell at me for over an hour because I spoke up about something that was bothering multiple people in the lab. I reported this to the CheqLine, to the corporate office, to ES, etc. and NEVER got a helpful response!! All that stuff is in place to make the company look good, but when it comes down to actually putting into action.....well, there is no action on the part of Quest. I AM one of those employees who will stand up and say something if I feel like something is unjust!! And, I got treated like crap after doing so.

Happy Quest Employee said: You may not want to admit it but maybe YOU are responsible for why Quest let you go. Think about what you did or did not do all day and ask yourself..would you keep you around if YOU were the boss? Quest would never let someone go that did not deserve it because of potential legal implications so to get my sympathy.. you will have to be WAY more specific about what happened before or leading to your being let go.
You sound like my supervisor. Your statement is not necessarily true. I have personally witnessed top employees being treated horribly because they stood up and spoke up against policies that they thought were unfair. Quest wants employees who do what they are told and never make any waves. So, yes, I do believe that Quest will terminate someone who is just too vocal even if that person is the top worker in the department. I hope people arent' naive enough to believe what this person says.....a company can make an employee's life hell and can find a way to get rid of them if the company doesn't like the employee.....

there are better opportunities out there then quest. If you don't like it leave it. I left for a start up and it is paying off. I never would imagine I would have part ownership in the company I work for. Smaller companies offer better pay and you may be part owner of the company, you can only dream about it at quest.
